Scarface School Play

If my school or nearest YMCA had auditions for this play as a kid I would definitely sign up and go for the lead but the area I grew up in wasn't this great and I had to settle for playing waiter #3 in my schools rendition of Casino.

Who knows if this is a real school play, a stunt or some neighborhood thing because this is all site says "Jaydon's school put on a kids production of Scarface" Whatever the case, it's a trip. Good job Jaydon's school, the sign up sheet for "the birdcage" will be up next by the drinking fountain.

Snoop Dogg was on Larry King Live on Friday, The show was pretty cool. My first thought was "Man! Snoop sells everything, from clothes, dog toys, headphones, and more. I bet he has a bunch of it in the trunk of his car to sell" It's a trip to see Larry King humor Snoop when he tries to make Larry hood. Hell, if I met Larry King I'd try to do the same thing. The Runaways - A Recap

The Runaways were in a league of their own in the mid-70s when they broke on to the Hollywood music scene. They were tough and rebellious and sexy and it is pretty nuts their story is only now becoming a big budget movie.

Thankfully to tell this amazing tale, all the heavy hitters were brought on board. Teen super star actress Kristin Stewart and Dakota Fanning played the leads (Kristin as Joan and Dakota as Sherie) MTV produced it, and music video visionary Floria Sigismondi directed it. Also brought on to play the notorious Kim Fowley was Oscar nominated Micheal Shannon. I recommend this movie for anyone in need of a rock and roll pick me up. It is visually stunning and the acting is great, however like most Hollywood behind the music stories plenty of holes.

My full recap after the jump. I'm not gonna give you guys a spoiler alert because to be honest if you don't know what happened to the runaways, maybe you should Wikipedia that before you see this movie anyways (i mean jeez get with it)



Micheal Shannon is a beast. If you have ever seen interviews of Kim Fowley (Micheal's role the record produced that developed the Runaways) you know his undoubtedly creepy and repulsive. Micheal manages to recreate him perfectly while still making you crack up. It is just brilliant; he is for sure the highlight of this film.

Kristin is also surprisingly good. Usually she annoys the piss out of me, but for some reason her aloofness works perfectly as a Joan Jett. I often forgot how bad she usually is as the "i could careless" teen.

Dakota Fanning was good. I mean she is a great actress, i didn't think she was going to be bad at all (unlike Kristin, i really thought she would suck) but my issues were with the way her character was presented, but more on that later.

Floria Sigismondi is an amazing director and i am so glad she was the one directing this movie. It was just amazing. She really brought that washed out and smoggy Hollywood of the 70s to life. Everything about the way it was shout i loved really.


Ok the plot. I saw this documentary Edgeplay that came before this feature length film and it was nuts! Tear jerking, gut wrenching and bad ass. Creating a group of all jail bait aged girls and feeding their dreams on drugs and sex is a very complicated tale, and I really didn't expect a movie to tell it better than the actually members themselves. I will say however a lot of the drugs and sex and abuse were not addressed to the same degree in this movie as they were in the doc. The lesbian sex was, but the sexual abuse from Kim Fowley, from the road, from their manager, were not really addressed. Maybe this was very much on purpose but i wish it wasn't because it really explained why Sherie was so hated and eventually left the group with a serious drug problem on a downward spiral. The way it was sold in the movie, the other band members were irrationally mean to her and she hand no choice but to leave. Also they totally blew off the two years the Runaways toured and performed and recorded without Sherie!

So all in all i give it a B-. Above average but dangerous close.

How Much Are You Worth Woman?

Baaah I hate money. I really do. It is so involved and so controlling. It seems like everyone understands it but me. I am constantly judged by how much I have, how much I owe and how little I know about it. It is just one big headache. This is how I feel, but I am finally coming to the point where I can put my feelings aside to do what I need to. I need to get my money together.

According to Insight Center for Community Economic Development, formerly the National Economic Development and Law Center (NEDLC), I am not alone here. In fact single minority woman have the least net worth of any group in America. Black woman are estimated to have $5 of wealth after debt. Wealth would include savings, investments, business investments. That means no matter how much we make, if you are not saving it or investing it in something real, we are being left behind. The ICCED recently published this report, Lifting as We Climb: Women of Color, Wealth and America’s Future. In it they break down where monitory women get left behind by there white female and male peers in the world of personal finance. I read this report so I could give you my thoughts. Read them after the jump!


MAAAAYBE YOU SHOULD GET MARRIED AFTER ALL
I know Sex and the City made you think you would live a fabulous and thrilling life of clothes and shoes if you never got married, but maybe that is why you should. For one, men tend to have more wealth than woman. This is minority and white men, so you are good no matter the race. Obviously duel incomes are great, but the report also touches on woman in marriages or cohabitation relationships having access to greater financial resources. Also addressed in the report; wealth is often passed down through generations. So a women might not see the fruit of that depending on her family and more importantly isn't preparing herself to pass money down to her family. Now I am not getting all 1950s on you. I don't think you should marry up just because, but there is a lot of knowledge and wisdom that comes from marring someone who comes from money that a single black girl like myself might not ever learn first hand and I totally understand that.

WHAT ARE YOU BUYING NOW
Obviously debt is a huge part of why we don't have wealth, ladies. Credit Cards and insane student loans will drag you down, and if mismanaged can really mess you up down the road. But that is not all, we also put money in some silly areas. The report averages a single black woman's wealth being about $100 between the ages of 18-64, but $5000 including her vehicle. Similarly, single Hispanic women average $120 of wealth between the ages of 18-64 and $2680 including her vehicle. The problem here, that is a quickly depleting asset.

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO BROKE NOW
One of the really shocking things I found in the report, was how our wealth breaks down by age. The average wealth for single black woman between the ages 18-35 is $0. Does that sound crazy, cause it is!? Think about how much you have in savings...then how much you owe Citibank and Visa... if you are at $0 or over, thank you! You are pulling the average up for use all. The truth here is that at 18...25..30 I am not thinking about my "wealth." It seems like something that comes into play looooong down the road. How long? Well I can tell you, not until your 50s. Unfortunately by the time we really start taking our personal finance seriously, our white peers are way ahead of us and if they are married (which they might be since whites marry at a far higher rate than black woman) she is loaded (relatively speaking). When I look at these numbers, that saying "start saving now" sounds like a much better idea.



I highly recommend this report, for anyone getting monthly calls from their folks like me about where your money is going. It is a reality check and a wake up call. My one complaint; there is no help in this report. Just stone cold facts and figures. I guess they are leaving it up to us to dig alil deeper and lift ourselves up, that or marry a white guy.

Rent The Runway - How you could really use it!

I'm sure by now everyone has heard of the success story that is Rent The Runway, but for those who haven't it is simple. You see the dress in Elle, You find out it retails for $750, you rent it for a few days instead from this website. Dresses i have seen range from $50 a day to $250. Now if you are OCD sensitive or have pride, this might not be the way to go for you. But if you need Helmet Lang more than you need to be sterile, this is your lucky day.

RTR even goes so far as to suggest some places you could wear these dresses, in case you don't have on e in mind. They are pretty basic... birthday party (yawn) wedding (booo) Black Tie Affair (really??)

Silver Lake Jubilee - Art Music Community Environment Festival

One thing I noticed right away about LA moving here from NY was that there are not nearly enough music and arts festivals. Maybe they are all super secret like so many exciting LA things, or maybe summer time is less event worthy when you have it 8 months out the year. Whatever the reason, i am always excited to learn about more festivals.

Imagine my excitement when I heard of Silver Lake Jubilee! A local festival for artist, musicians, local stores and restaurants as well as community and environmental organizations. I am so amped to see how the whole thing plays out. Even more i am super excited to see who they bring out to perform. Word around the lake is Mitchell Frank (of Spaceland Productions) was one of the 3 big names brought on for booking.

I know proof is nice to have but did you really need the details for this one? Turns out one of the many totally freaked out models that have worked with Pervy Terry is telling all. Jamie Peck is her name and she has stories boy! From tampon play to groping, she is laying it all out there. I guess i am glad she had the courage to out one of fashions biggest photographers for being totally weird and sexually inappropriate... but who didn't see that coming. I mean look at him! ugggh! Here is a very gross and vomit worthly quote from Jamie...

WOW! I know we as American's have just about run the electronic kick into the ground... but if there is a way to go out, Sleigh Bells is it. BIG beats. Not big but BIG. Blow out your shitty computer speakers big. You didn't know ppl made music for real speakers until you hear Sleigh Bells. I mean the bass is so heavy the grove is so solid. They have James Jamerson on their top myspace friends for fucks sake! I don't know what else to say to make you love these guys! I hear listening to "Ring Ring" twice a day can reduce your chances of cancer by .5% (how about that??)

They are hitting up SXSW this week - although i am sure that will no doubt be a mad house as they have recently signed with NEET Records (M.I.A.'s new project) They are also on tour with Yeasayer and Major Lazer this summer.

I was driving past my local Hollywood video and saw that they are giving away free kids. I was actually on my way to buy one but when I saw this I quickly detoured and inquired inside. Scooped up 2 kids; now my chores are finished much faster and i'm starting a Shoe making business.

I asked and they said it was meant to be for free kids videos. (for those who are taking me seriously and can't take a joke)

New Music - Dominique Young Unique "Show My Ass"

There is a new bread of female MC out there but it is still hard to know if we are suppose to be taking them seriously or not. MIA more activist than rhyme-smith, Santogold is a punk rocker first and form most, and Nicki... with those faces the verdict is still out on her. You throw in Amanda Blank, Rye Rye and Kid Sister and that makes a good piece of the new female MC.. interesting huh??

Well you might be adding this name to that list before you know it, Dominique Young Unique. She is "17" and a Tampa FL native. What is more important is that she is about to blow up. She fits the bill! Top Model looks (I mean watch Top Model this season... she could be on there easy) nasty mouth with a biting flow, and sick beats coming from the hottest names out. This is looking like an over night sensation to me or at least a summer of "hey, have you heard of this Dominique girl??"

Now I know I will get shit, for adding to the hype of "17" year old foul mouth rapper, but you know what I don't care. I think she got style. I think she could pick up where Rye Rye left off (like pretty much under the radar where know one knows her) and I am excited to see what becomes of this. Females in the rap game have never played by the rules and have always had to create their own lane. I think this new generation might prove to bring something new to the rap game as well, and something new would be really nice.

The Playstation 3 : Move

Playstation decide to try to compete with the WII. With this set up there is no nunchuck like the Wii, the accuracy is said to be better, the move will play HD games and it uses the playstation eye. Check out the trailer below for a better idea of it. I just hope the curling game doesn't work the same way as the Wii's version does. I'd rather be laughed at for trying to get a high score. Like a lot of you i follow random ass "celebrities" on twitter. Why?? Cause they live lives interesting enough to make for good reading but boring enough to have time to post on twitter. I follow all kinds of Dlisters but my fav is up and coming HipHop artist Shawn Chrystopher.

I am not trying to play him but right now he is up and coming. He is still clever, he is still open and refreshing and because he has not made it big he still has time on his hands. All of which makes for GREAT tweeting!

I keep saying any day now I will go on myspace and check out his older music because he is so funny his rhymes MUST be good. I never really do though. All the hiphop heads i work with think i am cool cause i have known about him for "pssh at least a year now" little do they know it is because a year ago Shawn was adding everyone and their moms in LA and came across my name some how. Still I check out his new stuff and love to see his name on hiphoppy blogs! Shawn is great and an example of "celebrities" that I think are great ppl and secretly hope don't get so big they stop tweeting.
